Starting University

I haven't posted in a while. I've been really busy doing stuff and preparing for uni and I just haven't had the time. Now I'm at uni I will probably have a lot of spare time to post.

Today is my first day at uni. I have moved in today and said goodbye to my family, my boyfriend and my friends. It was quite emotional saying goodbye but the emotions didn't fully hit me until I was on the phone and in my room on my own. I already can feel that this is going to be a hard change for me. To move about 55 miles away from home and everything and everyone I'm used to. Currently it feels weird living on my own in a flat with five other girls, there is a possibility of there being another person moving in but they aren't here yet.

I have gone to UCLan university in Preston to do a joint honours course of Fashion and Brand Promotion with Photography. I have chosen that course because it is perfect for what I want to do and for what my very far out dreams of doing in the future. I have a dream of what I want to do in the future but I also have no idea what I want to do. I know that makes no sense but my mind is completely messed up at the moment. I'm only 18 and I don't feel old enough to know what I want to do at the end of the three years I'm at uni.

It still feels quite surreal being here and not being with my boyfriend or being at home. I can feel now that it is going to take a lot to get used to. I know my first night is going to be hard on my own but everyone else is going through the same experience.

I've still got some bits to unpack. I did the main bit like sorting my bed and the bathroom out and I've unpacked a few bits but I've still got a few hair, makeup and toiletry bits to unpack. I've put my photos and photo frames up in my room. I've also got three teddys which my boyfriend has given me by my bed ready to cuddle at night.

Tomorrow I've got to go to the bank and set up a student bank account then I've got a few course events on which I have to attend, such as a course induction and welcome meetings. I have been speaking to other people who I am living with and they have much busier welcome week timetables and a lot earlier starts than me. I only have events monday to wednesday, whereas other people have a full week of events starting early in the morning.

I am going to finish here because there isn't really much more to say because I have only been here currently 7 hours. I will keep you updated on how I'm going.

My (Failed) Attempts At Lightening My Hair

Okay so my hair is dark brown almost black and I wanted to strip my hair and make it lighter so I did a bit of research into how to doing it and I came across a few interesting techniques and I tried two different processes. I didn't want to use bleach and I wanted to use products, which were in my house at the time because it was at night I wanted to do this. Probably not the best spur of the moment idea seen as I had college the next day but oh well what's the worst that could happen.

This is my hair before:

So the first method I tried was without using peroxide. I used a mixture of lemon juice, baking soda and toner shampoo (because I didn't have much regular shampoo left). I mixed a generous amount of each product in a bowl and left it on my hair for about half an hour to 40 minutes. This process didn't work, I saw no initial change, so I decided to scrap this and go onto using a different method.

My second method was using developer, which comes in packet dye. Like I said before I was doing this at night and I was only using products I had in the house. I wasn't going to use and sort of peroxide, as I didn't think I had any until I remembered that I had a spare box of box dye, which was a L’Oreal Casting Crème Gloss. I researched the volume in the developer and found out that in box dyes they use a 20-volume developer, which I know is weaker than usual developer used for lightening hair. So with a bit of advice from a friend who did hairdressing and the good old Internet I decided to give it a go.

What I found out is that you need to leave a 20 vol on longer than a 30 or 40 vol as it is weaker and most videos on YouTube that I have seen people using just developer use a 40 volume. So I found out that I should leave the 20 vol on my hair for about 30-40 minutes and that it is not advised for much longer than that. I decided to leave the developer on for 30 minutes.

What I Used:

• Gloves (mine came with the box dye)

• 20 volume Developer

• Clip

• Towel or bag for your head. If using a towel, one which you won't mind getting a bit messy.

What to do:

First I sectioned my hair using a clip.

Next getting fairly big sections of hair.

Apply the developer to each section.

Keep repeating this until you have covered all of your hair.

Make sure you rub it all in, I did it like I would rub shampoo in my hair.

Clip all the hair on top of your head.

Cover with bag or towel.

Leave for 30 minutes.

Rinse and see your results.

I set a timer for 30 minutes on my phone and kept checking my hair every so often to see how it was doing. I then made my self a brew (coffee for those who don't know what a brew is) and sat down and made a start on this blog post.

I didn't see much of a difference on the majority of my hair apart from my roots, which went a considerable amount lighter. I decided to leave my hair for about a week before I tried any other methods and because I had a university interview so I didn't want to do it and turn up with my hair being a mess.

The other method I tried after this was using the Colour B4 Extra Strength. I followed the instructions correctly however because my hair was close to black and I had previously dyed it red I ended up bright ginger after I blow-dried it. However the next morning I woke up with the top half of my hair ginger with black ends, I resembled someone who had badly dip dyed their hair.

This is how it turned out when I first did it:

After the disaster I woke up to the next morning I rang my hairdressers and basically said to them 'I've messed up, do what you want just fix it'. I was happy with my results after the hairdressers, I came away with light brown hair with blonde highlights on top. I am going to keep going to the hairdressers until I fully have lighter hair. I am planning to go dark blonde/ light brown.

Book Review: Beautiful by Katie Piper

This has got to be one of my favourite books I have every read and I feel that it fits very well with the theme of beauty with my blog.

I came across this book when I saw that someone had put a picture of Katie Piper on Facebook and then I remembered about her story. I had never watched the documentary but I really wanted to so originally I searched for it on Google, 4oD and YouTube and couldn't find it anywhere. Then I came across the book on Amazon when I had searched 'Katie Piper' in Google. So I thought why spend ages trying to find the program when I could just read about it, so that minute without a second thought I brought the Kindle version and downloaded it on three devices so I could read it anywhere.

For any of you who don't know the book is about a beautiful young woman aged 24 (Katie Piper) who was model and a TV presenter for a small TV channel. Who met a man on Facebook, went on a couple of dates then two weeks into their relationship he took her to a hotel room, raped her and then two days later got another man to throw sulphuric acid in her face. This book follows her story before and after the attack telling you how she recovered and what she did next.

Once I started reading the book I knew I would not be able to put it down, it was such a gripping book about her traumatic experience. This book is so inspiring and helps you to be grateful for what you have.

There are so many different emotions in this book, while reading it I cried, felt happy for her and was constantly sat on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened next, I just couldn't put it down at all.

There are so many inspirational quotes in this book, one of my favourites has to be

“Don't wait until there is tragedy in your life. Don't wait until you lose somebody. Don't wait until it's too late. Appreciate the beautiful people that you have in your life now.”

I love this quote it just shows how many people don't realise or appreciate the people they have in their life until something happens or they are gone.

Another one of my favourite quotes was

“Even when you think things can never move forward and you feel so low, there's always a way out.”

This just shows that even if things are tough at the moment and you feel like things are never going to change there is always a way out and a way to make things better.

This book is such an inspiration and I would definitely recommend reading it. It's such a good read and I promise you that you will not be able to put it down.
